Identifying plants from photopoints

Learn how to get species suggestions when you take a photopoint

Plant identification suggests which species a plant is from up to four photos, and you choose the species. You can also use it in Seed Collection.

Suggestions are a starting point, not a confirmed identification. The percentage shown is how strongly the match ranks against other species, not a guarantee. Always check the suggestion against the plant before you accept it.

Identify a plant from a new photopoint

  1. Open the Covram Field App on your mobile device and enter the map view for your project.
  2. Tap the Add button in the bottom right corner, then tap Photopoint.
  3. Take a photo and accept it. Fill the frame with leaves, flowers or fruit. The New photopoint dialog will appear.
  4. Tap Identify plant. Covram starts identifying the plant straight away, which can take up to a minute.
  5. Review the Likely species list. Each suggestion shows a percentage. Tap the species you think is correct.
  6. Back in the dialog, the species becomes the photopoint's label, unless you have already typed one, and the photo is tagged Plant.
  7. Add any other tags and tap Save. Nothing is saved if you cancel the dialog.

To get new suggestions before you save, tap Identify again.

Improve the match

Plant identification works best when photos show identifying features such as flowers, fruit, seeds and leaves. Fill the frame with the feature rather than photographing the whole plant.

To add another photo while reviewing suggestions, tap the add photo tile, which shows how many photos you have used, such as 1 of 4, and photograph a different feature. Covram then identifies the plant again using all the photos.

You can't add extra photos if Add activity (optional) is turned on in the New photopoint dialog, because the photo becomes the first view of a new site.

Identify a plant on an existing photopoint

  1. Open the photopoint in the Covram Field App.
  2. In the Plant identification card, tap Identify plant, or Identify again if the plant already has a species.
  3. Review the suggestions and tap the species you think is correct.

Choosing a species

  • Not confident: if the match is weak, Covram says so. Check carefully or add a photo of another part of the plant.
  • Not listed? Search all species: search the full species list if the plant isn't among the suggestions.
  • None of these – not sure: choose this if you can't tell.

Introduced species and weeds

Some species show a small label under their name:

  • Introduced: the species is not native to this state.
  • WoNS: the species is a Weed of National Significance.

When you're offline

Plant identification needs a connection. If your device is offline, Covram says You're offline and offers Identify later. Tap Try anyway instead if you think the connection is back.

With Identify later, the photopoint is saved so you can carry on, and you can review the suggestions on it once they're ready.

When your device is back online, Covram identifies the plant in the background and shows a message that suggestions are ready. Open the plant, or the Plants identified list, to review them and choose the species.

If a plant can't be identified, Covram tells you. You can add a photo, or tap Choose the species myself if you already know what it is.

Viewing identifications

The confirmed species appears in the Plant identification card on the photopoint's page in the Covram Dashboard.
